So many clients have asked me “Do I even need a blog? I have no idea what to write about.”

Blogging is very beneficial for not only generating traffic to your site but also for your business authority. Also, if you blog correctly you have the potential to bring in passive income - just for writing blog posts!

Let’s dive into the reasons that you should blog and determine how you can go about doing it.

Why blog?

  1. Google gives preference to sites that are updated regularly. This signifies that there is current, relevant information to show to people that are searching for the content you write about.

  2. We are able to share our posts on different social media platforms to capitalize our reach on various platforms and reach different audiences. Don’t forget Pinterest! It is actually considered a search engine as well and your posts live a long time and direct traffic to your website. Consider using a scheduling tool like Tailwind to set up your pin schedule to maximize your reach on Pinterest.

  3. It establishes you as an authority on the topics you write about. Before someone hires you they want to ensure that you know what you are talking about. Sharing your knowledge in blog posts is a fantastic way to not only provide helpful content, but to demonstrate your expertise.

  4. Not all visitors will be ready to purchase when they first are introduced to you, but if you provide valuable content that is of interest to them it will encourage them to follow your blog and sign up for your newsletter. You will have a loyal following that will be primed to work with you when they are ready.

  5. You can make money from your blog! What???? Yes, it is totally true. There are people who have a blog for the sole purpose of generating income and they do this successfully!

How do you make money blogging on Squarespace?

There are a few ways that you can make money from your Squarespace blog:

1/ Sharing affiliate links:

You can sign up for programs such as Amazon or RewardStyles or become an affiliate for any products that you use in your business and would feel good about promoting because you love them. For instance,

Also, for any courses you have taken that offer an affiliate program you can write a post to share your experience on the course along with your affiliate link. You will be surprised how quickly you make back the money you spent on the course.

Sharing your favorite products and courses is possible also without using RewardStyles. You can add them natively in Squarespace and just make sure you add a link that Google will like. Adding affiliate links in Squarespace is now easy with this awesome plugin from Will Myers called Affiliate Link Genie. This works on all blocks in Squarespace: text blocks, image blocks, gallery blocks and button blocks!

2/ Using an ad network:

Typically it is just the blogging for a business websites that have all of the ads and this is a controversial topic (along with popups!). If you have enough site traffic you may be open to adding ads to your website to generate income. Keep in mind that this changes the end user experience (not for the better) so make sure it is worthwhile to do so for you.

3/ By promoting your own services or products:

Don’t forget to share your own work and products to generate traffic to your own site!

If you sell products you can blog about how your products are used “in the wild”. For example, if you create resources for Teachers for lesson plans, you can share a blog post topic that is directly related to products you sell. For instance: “How to teach Science concepts to Grade 1 students” and include links to any of your products that would be applicable to grade 1 science curriculum.

For your services you could do case studies which show the before and after of working with you. An interior designer could share a home project for a client that details the products used (even better if you are an affiliate for the products), the pain points the client had before working with them and the results of the finished project including the beautiful after photos.

Always add a call to action in your blog posts such as “Interested in booking me for your room transformation?” with a link to your contact page or inquiry page.

What should you blog about?

As previously mentioned, you can blog about products or courses you have taken (especially if you are an affiliate), or products or services you sell. But more importantly, you should blog about topics that are of interest to your ideal client.

Think about what they are struggling with. What questions do they have? Explore facebook groups, forums etc to see what questions get asked and make a note of them. Compile a list that you can go to when you are ready to blog so you can answer these questions. Because you know people are looking for these answers you will likely have traffic coming to your site as they query in google for a solution. Also, you will have a reputation for providing helpful content and will build a loyal following.
